The Ontario Board of education has released an exciting new math curriculum starting September 2020, once schools officially re-open! This new curriculum is replacing the old, set back more than a decade ago in 2005.

If you are wondering what these new changes are, don’t worry! Teaching Gurus has got you covered with all the new changes. First of all these changes only affect grades 1 through 8 in math, these changes do not affect other subjects. The main reason why the board decided to make this change is simple, it was simply outdated with today’s world. Examples in the books were based on old technology and older formats that students just cannot relate to today. “In the 2020 curriculum, there will be relevant, real-life examples that help connect math to everyday life, such as developing infographics, creating a budget, e-transfers and learning to code” – ontario.ca/page/new-math-curriculum
In the new and updated math curriculum, there will be more of a focus on students learning their timetables from 0 to 12! Which is big news considering many students that are enrolled in Teaching gurus do not know their timetables at all! We are glad to see there is some sort of a push from the Ontario board of education on mental math.
Another notable change is the “financial Literacy” section, which simply means, learning about money. In the old curriculum, students were only taught about basic currency, which included names, adding, and subtracting. Now, “In the 2020 curriculum, there will be mandatory financial literacy learning in Grades 1 to 8, including understanding the value and use of money over time, how to manage financial well-being, and the value of budgeting.”- The New Math curriculum Ontario.
There are some great new tools and ideas being brought up in the new format the Ontario board has released. Teaching Gurus is very excited about this new program which will be implemented in our tutoring programs and help students excel in their academic goals!
